Community Tourism in Colombia: Live a Unique Experience with a Wayuu Family
When we think of Mazonia, we think of accessories vibrant with color and soul. But behind each accessory, there is a much bigger story: that of an encounter, of a trust built over time, and of a deep commitment .
After 7 years of sincere collaboration with the Wayuu weavers, a new chapter has opened. In 2024, it was the women of the community themselves who asked us to accompany them in a dream: that of opening the doors of their daily lives to travelers, while respecting their values and traditions. From this request was born Art EXPLORER , an immersive community tourism project, co-constructed step by step, with them, for them, and with you.
At Mazonia, everything starts with a deep human connection.
Rendezvous in unknown Wayuu land
With Art EXPLORER , we invite you to live a different experience . Far from standardized hotels and classic tourist circuits, here, you enter another temporality. You walk on the fine sand of La Guajira, the desert wind in your hair, the sun caressing your skin, and above all, this encounter with an incredible people: the Wayuus !
You are welcomed by the family of Miriam , a Wayuu weaver, in the heart of her community. She and her family teach you how to weave the first steps of a traditional mochila bag but also a chinchorro ( traditional Wayuu hammock) using methods passed down from mother to daughter. You discover their daily life, their traditions, their stories with the utmost respect.
There's no folklore here. What you're experiencing is real life , that of strong women who have chosen to share a part of their world with you.
A tailor-made immersion
Art EXPLORER offers several experience formats:
-
An immersive morning , ideal for passing travelers curious to understand the basics of Wayuu weaving.
-
An overnight experience , to immerse yourself more deeply, sleep in a traditional hammock and share meals with the family.
-
It is also possible to add 2 to 4 days of desert travel. Our local partner, Sumaj Tours, offers trips to Cabo de la Vela and Punta Gallinas, in addition to visiting the community.
Everything is designed so that you can adapt at your own pace , and so that the impact of your visit is positive, lasting and respectful .
Why this project?
Because Mazonia believes that impact is not limited to creating jobs. We want to go further. We want to show, bring to life, and understand . Tourism, if done well, can be a powerful tool for transformation . It can revive a people's pride in their own culture, reveal the richness of their ancestral know-how, and above all, generate sustainable income!
For years, the Wayuu have been seen as distant figures, often reduced to clichés. With Art EXPLORER, we want to restore the truth : they are entrepreneurial, organized, innovative, and talented women. They are mothers, sisters, heads of families. And they deserve to be met in their truth, with respect .
A 100% transparent, 100% collaborative project
At Mazonia, nothing is done without collaboration. This project was born with the Wayuu women, in a spirit of co-construction at every stage. Each activity was thought out and defined together , to guarantee a fair and transparent distribution of roles and income. The cook who makes the coffee, the one who cooks the meals, the weaver who passes on her art: each is fairly paid for her contribution .
We believe in the clarity of intentions and the richness of genuine exchanges. Art EXPLORER is not a simple journey: it is an encounter between two worlds that, for the duration of an immersion, look at each other with curiosity, respect, and humanity.
What you experience here is rare—a dive into a profoundly different everyday life, an invitation to slow down, to listen, to feel. But it's not one-sided: for the community too, each visit is an opening, a chance to discover other horizons, other languages, other ways of seeing the world.
There is something profoundly transformative in this reciprocity. A value that is not measured solely in numbers, but in glances exchanged, in stories shared, in bonds forged over the course of days.
The concrete impact already visible
Since the first immersions were tested in early 2024, the feedback has been incredible. Visitors left transformed : more aware, more connected, more impacted. The women in the community have gained confidence, autonomy , and above all, visibility . Some have been able to invest in equipment, others have been able to send their children to school more regularly. For them, this project is more than just an income: it's recognition.
And for Mazonia, it's a natural extension of our mission: to create a fairer world by promoting craftsmanship and human connections.
